I don’t usually write about current events here. It’s not because I don’t care; it’s because I don’t know what to say. I woke up around 3 this morning and it took me a long time to fall back asleep, thinking of the stories I’d seen and heard about the aftermath of Katrina. Whole families drown in their own homes–a mom and dad and their two kids who stayed put because they were afraid of the looters who might come if they left their place unattended. People moving their neighbor’s body out to the sidewalk at the end of the street because they’re trying to get back a little closer to normal life and having a dead person in the house next door wasn’t helping. A 12-year-old girl whose remaining possessions don’t even fill the one muddy bucket she carried around what used to be her house looking for anything recognizable. It’s all so sad and overwhelming even from this distance, and I can’t even imagine what it’s like to be there. I can give money and I can pray and I can send healing thoughts, but there’s no way to make it all better.
