Spring!
April 12, 2002
Yesterday was the first day that really felt like spring—warm, sunny, a little breezy. When I pulled into the driveway coming home from work, I noticed the first daffodil of the season had opened its face, so that confirmed it. I took a walk around the neighborhood instead of working out inside to a video tape. A lot of people were out and about, walking their dogs or pushing strollers or walking themselves. I imagine many of them were like me, anxious to take advantage of the glorious weather before the rain and cold move back in—after all, we had ice on the roads less than a week ago, so one can’t count on consistent weather.
There’s a jumping on the bandwagon aspect to it—getting out and walking for the first time in months just because the weather’s nice. I’m usually cranky about bandwagon jumping, both on and off. It irritates me when people start doing something because it’s newly fun— where were they before, when it wasn’t so fun? Seems like the people who were around in the bad times deserve the good times more than the Johnny come latelies. And it pisses me off when people disappear when the fun stops, the fair weather fan phenomenon. Maybe it’s due to growing up watching the Chicago Cubs. But I’m working on mellowing out about this. Fun isn’t a limited commodity in most cases. My taking a walk in the nice weather doesn’t diminish the enjoyment of the walkers who’ve been walking all along in the rain and the cold. With sports it’s harder, as the loyal fans may indeed be unable to get tickets if the fair weather ones snap them all up first. But if they can get into the game, surely the victories are sweeter for the fans who’ve seen the losses that came before.
