Champions

June 16, 2004

Contrary to the prediction of the clueless cabdriver who took us to the airport in Las Vegas, fans did not “burn the place down” when the Pistons won the NBA Championship last night. (I wonder now if the cabdriver was actually a writer for Jimmy Kimmel.) In fact, fans in Detroit haven’t burned anything down in a long time, not since the Tigers won the World Series in 1984. When the Pistons won NBA Championships in 1989 and 1990, there was no rioting, unlike say, when the Lakers won in 2000. Now, I must admit, students at my alma mater just down the road a piece (a long piece) have gotten out of control during March Madness in recent years–mostly related to losses, though, not wins. They’re probably just trying to fit in, since evidently rioting is all the rage among college kids these days.

At any rate, I didn’t have to drive to work today past the smoldering remains of burned out cars or shopkeepers sweeping up broken glass. The most dramatic thing I saw was a Hummer that appeared to have gotten stuck in the mud doing doughnuts in the grass across the street from the Palace. (I think they have a picture of the facility at night on their website to disguise how much it looks like a big brick gas cap.) Now if I can just avoid the victory rally traffic going home tomorrow, I’ll be a happy girl.

A year ago, there was no entry, not even a short one.

Two years ago, it was Father’s Day.
