Still Fits, Kinda

September 7, 2007

I tried on my wetsuit last night, the one I haven’t worn since I stopped kayaking some years back. Since I’m more than a few pounds heavier than I was when I bought it, I didn’t think it would fit, but curiosity and the outside chance I’ll be in a situation this weekend when wearing neoprene might be just the thing compelled me to try. I was surprised to find I was able to squeeze myself into it. I was more surprised to find that I had the most trouble getting it over my calves. My calves! Not my thighs or my hips or my butt or my stomach, but my calves, which I’ve never considered a problem area. What’s up with that? Is that where the effects of my running are showing up and I didn’t even realize it because I don’t take a tape measure to my calves the way I do to other parts of my body? And now that I know I’ve got big calves, what am I going to do about it? I know the answer to that last one: nothing. My calves are the least of my worries, body-wise.

The most of my worries body-wise is my current inability to run as much as I want. (Pardon me while I pause right here to contemplate how strange and wonderful it is that I *want* to run.) Slacking off on my PT exercises means it’s a struggle right now to complete four sets of intervals with 2 minutes walking and 3 minutes running. My lungs and heart could do more, but my right leg starts to object during the third set. But I’m on week two of my toilet stall squats plan and have set myself a goal to do three workouts with three sets of three PT exercises this week (so far I’ve done two), so that should help. Eventually.
