One Month In
February 3, 2009
Good news! It’s one month into the new year, and I have not yet given up on all my resolutions. Let’s see how much progress I’ve made since the last time I did a goal check-in, shall we?
1. Weigh less and move more.
I set these weekly sub-goals for this one: log everything I eat into SparkPeople, run or bike twice, gym twice.
I did not complete the SparkPeople logging. I started strong that first Monday; by Tuesday dinner I stopped and never re-started. That might mean I’m not in the right headspace to change my eating habits, but I think it’s more that SparkPeople is not a good fit for me right now. I just found it so very tedious and could not make myself continue. Finding the foods I’d eaten was an issue, serving sizes were another, and I was writing down a lot of it beforehand anyway because I’m not always by a computer when I’m eating. I think a return to good old fashioned paper and pen is the way to go.
Despite my failure to keep a good food log, I ended January weighing less than I started it. I must admit most of that is due to the five pounds I lost over this past weekend thanks to food poisoning (at least I assume it was food poisoning), but I did go on vacation for a week and not gain at all, so that’s a big positive that was under my control.
On the workout front, I did get to the gym twice each non-vacation week. I wasn’t as consistent with the running and biking but at least got in one session each week which is better than none. Also, I’ve been doing a lot of snow shoveling, which has to count for something.
2. Keep less and organize more.
Weekly sub-goals: Get 2007 photos archived and get the rest of 2008 ready to review with Mr. Karen, with bonus points if I get any prints made of things we’ve already sorted out.
I scored a two out of three on this first week: 2007 is archived, and I got a bunch of months uploaded and printed from Shutterfly. 2008 is languishing, though, and I haven’t even looked at those files since we got back from Wyoming. Nor have I set any new weekly goals or done anything in the way of organizing, unless I can count sorting laundry, which I have done a whole lot of (skiing involves wearing many layers, all of which need washing).
3. Surf less and contribute more.
Weekly sub-goals: proof/format at least a page a day, upload at least seven memorial pictures, and add three albums to QuiltGroup.
I did all of that the first week after I set those sub-goals; since then, not so much. It helps not at all that Distributed Proofreaders has been blocked at work, which is very odd since I can pretty much do anything else I want during my breaks. I have hope it might be unblocked at some point, but I can’t really push for that since it’s not work-related—maybe I’ll just go into the lounge and play pinball when I would have been proofing.
Now would be a perfect time to set some new weekly sub-goals for February. I’m still a bit off from being sick and feeling a bit more stressed than usual besides, so I’m going to give myself a break on that just try to do what I can for the next week or so and then re-evaluate.
