In the Belly of the Beast

December 22, 2009

I’m not sure I want to look too closely at what it means that when asked by the Holidailies prompt for today about my favorite holiday scene in a movie the first thing that came to mind was an image from Nightmare Before Christmas in which a giant snake eats a Christmas tree while a horrified child looks on. (In procrastinating about writing this entry, I found this 3D photograph of that scene taken by one of the animators, Joel Fletcher; pity that I seem to recall throwing out the last pair of 3D glasses I came across in the mess that is my house. Anyway, back to the scene.) Why would I identify so strongly with that particular image–am I the child? I sure did have some crappy Christmases growing up—thank you, demon alcohol and Dad’s brain chemistry—but I don’t feel sad or upset or angry when I see the snake eating the presents and then the tree; I laugh. So maybe I’m the snake? That can’t be right—I’m not Ms. Christmas Cheer (I’m not even doing cards this year) but I’m not the Grinch, either. Maybe it’s just a cool visual and it doesn’t mean anything that I like it so much. Perhaps I should pop in the DVD tonight and do some further analysis.
