Candy is Dandy

December 9, 2012

A while back, one of my friends from work invited me to a gingerbread house decorating party. She’d make and assemble the houses; all we guests had to do was show up with some candy to contribute to the supply pool. That sounded good to me.

Well, yesterday was the day. When I arrived there were somewhere around 20 houses she’d made, from small cabins for the little kids to two kinds of larger houses for the grownups. There were tables covered with containers filled with candy, and this was before many guests had gotten there with their contributions. My friend was filling pastry bags with icing from a huge container.

Undecorated houses

I chose the simpler style of grown up house, figuring that gave me more blank space to create. I started with the roof, covering it with alternating rows of red and green M&Ms. A door and window on the front came next, then a path and a tree.

Front in process

When I was done, it looked like this from the front:

And from the back, looking around to the side:

Back of the house, coming around to the side

It was fun to play for an afternoon and see what everyone else did with their houses. Some people got quite elaborate; I was impressed. This is the sort of holiday tradition I could get behind.

What Mary said! Absolutely a fun tradition, might have to steal that for my first in-my-own-place Christmas (2013, here’s hoping!)
