Barely squeaking this one in today; I am up very late because I spent the evening with guests who are visiting us at work this week. We went downtown and rode the People Mover, which showed nicely with this mosaic mural in the station we started off at.
We rode to Greektown and had dinner at Pegasus Taverna, then rode back to our starting point for the main event of the evening, the Red Wings game at Joe Louis Arena. They played the Toronto Maple Leafs, and quite a lot of their fans showed up—it made for a fun atmosphere because no matter what happened, about half the folks were happy and excited and half not so much. Even the taunting was good natured, especially when a woman in our section yelled “Go back home and make some syrup”.
It’s been ages since I’ve been to a hockey game, and I don’t think I’ve ever been to an NHL game, so I don’t know if the shovel squad that skated out during timeouts is a new thing or a pro thing, but they were fun to watch swooping around cleaning up the ice.
It was a good close game, scoreless in the first period, Wings up 1-0 after the second, and tied 1-1 after the third, so we got to see an overtime period, too.
Neither team scored in overtime, so we also got to see a shootout—I definitely got good value for the company money I spent on the tickets.
Unfortunately the Wings lost the shootout, but if they had to lose, I’m glad it was so very close (shots on goal weren’t close—Wings had more than twice as many as the Leafs but that’s how it goes sometimes). And my guests had a good time, which is the important thing, and I was also able to include two of the guys on my team who are hockey fans, so that was good, too. Now it’s way late, and I need to get to bed, so off I go.

The snow squad — it’s a pro thing for sure. (The Caps generally use local youth hockey team members, along with arena staff.) That was a good game – it was televised nationally last night.
