Mundanity on the Mountain

December 3, 2018

The first thing I do when I sit down to write for Holidailies is update the list of prior years’ posts by adding the one from last year. Thus I saw that a year ago today, I was skiing seven inches of fresh snow. This year, not so much. I decided to take a day off from the slopes, as no new snow has fallen (though they have been making more every night this week; we can hear and see the snow guns on the top of the beginner slope from our front porch) and no new terrain has opened, plus I have plenty of stuff to do around the house. At this moment, I’m waiting for the latest load of laundry to come out of the dryer. Despite a couple of trips to the laundromat while we were away last month, we still came home with plenty of dirty clothes, some of which I want to take on our next trip, which starts tomorrow, so I’ve been a washin’ and a dryin’. Years ago I rode up a ski lift with a woman at Deer Valley who was a local; when she told me that I replied with something to the effect that she was so fortunate she could ski every day and she came back with no she can’t because “someone still has to clean the toilets”. Little did I know then that I’d someday be that woman—though I’ve yet to tell a stranger on the lift about the state of my toilets. If I were more committed and/or energetic, I could have skied today and still done laundry and the other things I need to accomplish before we leave tomorrow morning, but that would have meant more stress and I’m trying to have less stress. My anxiety brain generates enough nonsense as it is, no sense giving it more reasons to freak out.

I can’t even imagine snow like that. It’s spring like here in the south!
