One category of images that I had to delete from my phone to make room for the new iOS was screenshots of ads that get served up to me by algorithms that are not as targeted as they could be. I find it comforting that big tech doesn’t have me entirely figured out.
Case in point: this ad for a dating app that appears to be aimed at men who think they “deserve” a woman like those pictured … and are possibly cheating on an existing partner, what with the “discreet” code word. Is this Ashley Madison reborn? Do any of the women pictured actually use the app? Are the women you find on the app actually real people? If they are real people, are they actually women? And why are none of them blonde? I thought blondes were in demand, but maybe that’s old person thinking, something I am more and more prone to.
(I decided to search to see what happened to Ashley Madison. Seemed unlikely they’d still be around after the events in the Netflix documentary I watched, but yes, they are still operating. Gross, just like this ad.)
